Director Nia DaCosta has openly discussed her experience directing The Marvels, revealing that the final film differed significantly from her initial vision. Speaking at Dublin’s second annual screenwriting festival, Storyhouse, DaCosta reflected on the challenges she faced during production. She noted that at a certain point, she realized the movie was not going to align with her original pitch or even the first version she filmed.

DaCosta highlighted the differences between her filmmaking approach and Marvel Studios’ established processes, stating that their methods differ from how she would ideally make a film. She emphasized the necessity of adapting to the studio’s system and trusting in their established procedures.

Despite these challenges, DaCosta viewed the experience as a valuable learning opportunity, noting that navigating such situations strengthens a filmmaker’s adaptability and resilience.

The Marvels faced significant hurdles upon release, becoming one of Marvel Studios’ lowest-grossing films, with reported losses around $300 million.

Following this project, DaCosta has been involved in directing Hedda, an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s play Hedda Gabler, starring Tessa Thompson. She is also set to direct 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, scheduled for release on January 16, 2026.
