Andie MacDowell, 66, Opens Up About Surprising Health Struggle

Andie MacDowell, the beloved 66-year-old actress known for her timeless performances, recently shared details about her health and views on aging during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. In a candid conversation with Drew, Andie revealed she suffers from Piriformis Syndrome, a condition that affects the sciatic nerve and causes pain, numbness, or tingling in the buttocks and legs.

A Health Challenge

Discussing her diagnosis, Andie said, “I have Piriformis Syndrome. It’s a muscle that clamps down on my sciatic nerve, shooting pain down my leg. I thought I’d need a hip replacement, but thankfully, my hips are fine.” To manage the condition, Andie follows a dedicated exercise routine with a personal trainer, focusing on her hips and glutes. “I just do it every day, and it’s a miracle—it doesn’t hurt anymore.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, Piriformis Syndrome occurs when the piriformis muscle spasms and compresses the sciatic nerve. This can lead to discomfort in the lower back, buttocks, and legs.

Aging Gracefully

Andie also opened up about the challenges of aging in Hollywood, a notoriously image-conscious industry. She shared her decision to move away from Los Angeles to South Carolina, where she lives among a community of people her age. This transition has brought her peace and a sense of belonging.

“In LA, there’s a microscope on women, but in my new community, it’s easy to socialize and feel comfortable,” she explained.

While Andie acknowledges the pressures of maintaining beauty standards in Hollywood, she remains focused on health and happiness. “I enjoy eating, but I also love working out, which is my saving grace,” she said, admitting that an intense Peloton routine left her with knee and hip issues. Fortunately, physical therapy has helped her feel like herself again.

Family and Fulfillment

The conversation also touched on Andie’s family life. She revealed that she’s about to become a grandmother for the third time, as her son Justin Qualley is expecting another child. Reflecting on her journey as an empty nester, Andie admitted that adjusting to her children’s independence has been challenging.

“I’ve had to work hard on my independence. My daughter Margaret [Qualley] once told me I needed to get a life, and she was right. But I’m so proud of all my kids and how well they’re doing,” she said.

A Positive Outlook

Despite facing health challenges and societal pressures, Andie maintains an inspiring perspective on life and her career. She remains passionate about acting and cherishes the joy of being on set. “At my age, it’s amazing to still feel excited about my work. I try to share that joy and remind everyone how lucky we are.”

Andie MacDowell’s honesty about her struggles and triumphs serves as a reminder that aging is a natural, evolving process. With a focus on health, family, and self-acceptance, she continues to be a role model for women everywhere.
