More than 20 years on from their deaths, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy still represent one of the coolest couples ever.
Photos of the couple that once graced tabloid covers, depicting them strolling through New York or turning heads at society events, can be now found on many Instagram accounts and they fascinate many photographers and writers.
Carolyn and John’s incomparable allure is still a point of reference for many, including royals like Meghan Markle, who love Carolyn’s simple and effortlessly elegant style that made her an icon.
Dubbed America’s ‘prince’, John Kennedy Jr. dated stars including Sarah Jessica Parker, Madonna and Daryl Hannah during the 80s and early 90s. Yet it was Carolyn Bessette, then a rising star at Calvin Klein, who would prove his match.
Gustavo Paredes, a friend of the couple, told People in 2014 that they met at the Calvin Klein showroom in 1994, when Carolyn was a publicist for the fashion house. According to Paredes, John asked Carolyn out but she turned him down — several times.
“She didn’t think he was serious. He couldn’t believe she turned him down. It had never happened before,” he told.
“[He] kept figuring out a way to keep coming back to the showroom for more business meetings and more fittings.” “Carolyn wasn’t John’s shadow; she was his equal,” says Terenzio.
